A new Cretaceous terrestrial ecosystem from Gondwana with the description of a new sauropod dinosaur Anais da ABC (AABC)

A unique site at the northern area of Patagonia (Neuquén, Argentina) reveals a terrestrial ecosystem preserved in a detail never reported before in a Late Cretaceous deposit. An extraordinary diversity and abundance of fossils was found concentrated in a 0.5 m horizon in the same quarry, including a new titanosaur sauropod, Futalognkosaurus dukei n.gen., n.sp, which is the most complete giant dinosaur known so far. Several plant leaves, showing a predominance of angiosperms over gymnosperms that likely constituted the diet of F. dukei were found too. Other dinosaurs (sauropods, theropods, ornithopods), crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs, and fishes were also discovered, allowing a partial reconstruction of this Gondwanan continental ecosystem.

A revision of the Late Triassic Bintan fl ora from the Riau Archipelago (Indonesia) Naturalis

In 1951, W.J. Jongmans published the description of a small flora from Bintan Island in the Riau Archipelago of Indonesia, based on material from one fossil locality in the Bintan Formation (Late Triassic). The complete fossil plant collection from Bintan includes specimens from four localities, all of which were examined for the first time in this study. Twenty-one taxa were determined, compared to an earlier four, and three earlier determinations were revised. Of these 21 taxa, 14 were attributed to the Bennettitales, including eleven leaf species, one Williamsonia sp., and two other fertile and stem organs. Abundance and distribution of Lithophaga (Mytilidae) in extant and fossil oysters: taphonomic and paleobiological implications Ameghiniana

In this study we analyze the abundance and distribution patterns of Lithophaga patagonica in valves of Ostrea puelchana and compare them to those of Lithophaga sp. observed on the fossil species " Ostrea " patagonica and " Ostrea " alvarezii from the late Miocene Puerto Madryn Formation. No specimen of the fossil oysters showed borings of Lithophaga sp. on the interior surface of the valves. This suggests that they were produced while the oysters were still living and, at the same time, that the oyster beds were buried rapidly after death. In Ostrea puelchana the boring abundance was significantly higher for the left valve and, within it, the areas more heavily bored were the umbones and the platform. Influence of hydro-sedimentary factors on mollusc death assemblages in a temperate mixed tide-and-wave dominated coastal environment: Implications for the fossil record ArchiMer

Mollusc death assemblages were recovered in 98 subtidal sampling stations on the seafloor of the shallow Pertuis Charentais Sea (Atlantic coast of France). Taxonomic composition and spatial distribution of death assemblages were investigated, as well as their response to sediment grain size (field data), bottom shear stress (coupled tide and wave hydrodynamic modelling), and sediment budget (bathymetric difference map) Results showed that molluscs are likely to be reliable paleoenvironmental indicators since death assemblages were able to acquire ecological changes within years (decadal-scale taphonomic inertia), and live-dead agreement inferred from existing data on living benthic communities was high, except close to river mouths and intertidal mudflats...

Late Cretaceous stomatopods (Crustacea, Malacostraca) from Israel and Jordan Naturalis

The eryonid decapod Eryon yehoachi Remy & Avnimelech, 1955, from the Late Cretaceous of Israel, is redescribed as a fossil stomatopod species within the new genus Ursquilla. This redescription is based on the original type specimen and two additional records from Israel and Jordan. The material allows a detailed reconstruction of the telson, the sixth abdominal tergite, and part of the uropods. The distinct telson ornamentation of these stomatopods justifies the erection of a new family within the superfamily Squilloidea.

Live−dead comparison of benthic foraminiferal faunas from the Rhône prodelta (Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean): Development of a proxy for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions ArchiMer

Dead benthic foraminiferal faunas (> 150 μm) from the Rhône prodelta (Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean) were analysed at 41 stations (15–100 m water depth) sampled in June 2005 and September 2006, and compared to the living faunas investigated during previous studies at the same stations. The comparison between dead and living assemblages enhances the understanding of taphonomic processes that may modify the composition of the dead faunas in this area. We observed a loss of individuals from living to dead assemblages of species characterised by a fairly fragile test and therefore more prone to fragmentation or dissolution (e.g., Bolivina alata, Quinqueloculina tenuicollis). Major developments in conulariid research: problems of interpretation and future perspectives Ameghiniana

Renewed interest in conulariids has resulted in clarification of problems in the paleobiology of this group. Discoveries of skeletal structures and specimens preserved in situ, coupled with cladistic analyses, have led to a revival of Kiderlen's (1937) hypothesis that conulariids were polypoid scyphozoans or a sister taxon of this class. Until 1979, research on conulariids centered on the description of new species and on the erection of subgroups using phenetic approaches. Few papers addressed the paleobiology and phylogenetic affinities of conulariids, and none employed cladistics. Optimising the use of marine tephrochronology in the North Atlantic: a detailed investigation of the Faroe Marine Ash Zones II, III and IV ArchiMer

Tephrochronology is central to the INTIMATE(1) goals for testing the degree of climatic synchroneity during abrupt climatic events that punctuated the last glacial period. Since their identification in North Atlantic marine sequences, the Faroe Marine Ash Zone II (FMAZ II), FMAZ III and FMAZ IV have received considerable attention due to their potential for high-precision synchronisation with the Greenland ice-cores. In order to optimise the use of these horizons as isochronous markers, a detailed re-investigation of their geochemical composition, sedimentology and the processes that deposited each ash zone is presented. This work gives preliminary information on the taxonomic determinations for the micromammal fossil material from the locality of exceptional preservation of Casa Montero (Madrid). The proposed taxonomic assignations have allowed the correlation of this fossil material with localities belonging to the biozone E (middle Aragonian, middle Miocene) of Daams et al. (1999). Porcupine gnaw marks on a Late Pliocene bone from the Upper Siwaliks exposed near Village Khetpurali (Haryana, India) Anais da ABC (AABC)

Abstract Abstract:Bone accumulation by porcupines at archaeological sites is well known. However, in paleontological sites such a taphonomical occurrence is rather rare. We here report porcupine (Hystrix sp.) gnaw marks on an unidentified bone fragment, dated to ~2.6 Ma from the Upper Siwalik deposits exposed near Khetpurali (Haryana), India. The present gnaw marks are very distinct and are characterized by visible edges and grooves making clear broad and shallow furrows. The present find adds to our knowledge of Siwalik vertebrate taphonomy where most of the accumulations reported earlier were either fluvial or made by carnivores.

A large collection of Neozanthopsis americana (Rathbun, 1928) from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) Cane River Formation in Louisiana, USA, represents the first opportunity to describe the species in detail. Detailed analysis of associated teleost otoliths and other vertebrate remains documents a palaeoenvironmental setting characterised by a soft-sediment, inner-shelf setting with normal salinity under tropical or subtropical conditions. Anatomical and morphometric analysis of 21 of the better-preserved crabs demonstrates that gender discrimination cannot be made from dorsal carapace characteristics and that the sample represents post-juvenile individuals. This study represents one of the first contributions to the knowledge on the quantitative fidelity of the recent freshwater molluscan assemblages in subtropical rivers. Thanatocoenoses and biocoenoses were studied in straight and meandering to braided sectors, in the middle course of the Touro Passo River, a fourth-order tributary of the Uruguay River, located in the westernmost part of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Samplings were carried out through quadrats of 5 m², five in each sector. A total area of 50 m² was sampled. The Triassic insect fauna from the Los Rastros Formation (Bermejo Basin), La Rioja Province (Argentina): its context, taphonomy and paleobiology Ameghiniana

In the Bermejo Basin, the Los Rastros Formation bears an abundant insect fauna, mainly of terrestrial winged adult organisms related to the Blattoptera and the Coleoptera orders. The insect remains are found in the black shales of the offshore lacustrine facies and their taphonomic features suggest that the specimens were allochthonous to the lake. The individuals appear to arrived alive to the lake and had a rapid fall trough the water column, thus, they are preserved intact. In contrast, some of them may have suffered fragmentation in air traspontation and/or biological attack during long periods of flotation.
